This design is specifically intended for in-wall and in-ceiling installations. Most conventional speaker cables are of a figure-of-eight design, in which the conductors are protected from their surroundings by a single layer. As the cable is pulled through the fabric of a building, this outer jacket can easily be damaged, leading to breakage and significant long-term problems.

Many low cost, so-called, custom cables use no more than eight strands to make up the gauge of cable. When a limited number of strands are used, the cable becomes noticeably stiffer, leading to longer installation times. If any of the cores break, the gauge of the cable and therefore its conductivity can change significantly.
